We study rocks for about ten thousand years. From the time we started forming our society we are using rocks as our first tools.
Moreover, our culture and lifestyle are affected by rocks: the first paints, the first building materials, all came from rocks.
So rocks were from the start dominant resources for us, and they are also affecting our health.
What are men to rocks and mountains?
Jane Austen
Rocks are the primary source of life. They define what we breathe, what we eat, and what we drink. So rocks do affect us and our health.
Geologists study rocks because they affect our health. Hence, Earth Science is the story of how Earth affects our health.
Moreover, rocks are also raw materials for many of the products we use in our daily lives. Yet we may not realise our dependence on rocks and the environment.
The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.
Vladimir Nabokov
Therefore it is not only important to use rocks as materials but also study their impact on our health. Only recently scientists started to study rocks from a health point of view.
For thousands of years, we have been using materials that we do not know cause sickness. But this is changing with research and education in new sciences like Medical Geology.
But how rocks and our health are connected. In this episode, I am sharing all about the hows and whys.
