WHY THE SEA IS SALTY

The sea is salty, we all know that. But have you ever wondered why there is so much salt in the sea? Even if you never notice, I am sure maybe someone else, like your child, asked about it.

Hence, where did all this salt come from? When I was a child, our teacher in primary school was telling us a story of the origin of salt.

So the story went like this: there was a ship carrying salt, and it sank in the middle of the sea.

We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one.

Jacques Yves Cousteau

But the story made no sense. Because the ship must have been the size of Earth and also that does not say anything about the origin of salt.

Anyway, thankfully, I grew to become a geologist and I finally found out why

Hence I am sharing in this episode why the sea is salty. A hint for you: there is nothing to do about a ship.

Salt is born of the purest parents: the sun and the sea.

Pythagoras

On the contrary, the sea is salty because of the interaction between the water cycle and rocks.

Therefore, this is a natural process of the Earth which ends up making the sea salty.

But also the salt is also a source of food for the sea animals and vegetation.
