Pandemics are one of the most influential changes in the world. Like world wars, pandemics are causing the worst impacts on our daily lives.
But unlike wars, they are much harder to be controlled or defeated. Some of them have been present for many centuries, changing human history forever.
So it is quite useful for us to know all about them, especially now with this new pandemic, to learn from our past experiences on how we were able to go through them.
After all it really is all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic.
Margaret Chan
However, there is another reason why the past can help us now and in the future.
Pandemic history can show us that even the deadliest one that killed almost half of the world population, we were able to survive and create a better health system.
That the AIDS pandemic is threatening sustainable development in Africa only reinforces the reality that health is at the center of sustainable development.
Gro Harlem Brundtland
In this episode, we are talking all about the five deadliest pandemics:
- Justinian Plague
- The Black Death
- Smallpox
- Spanish Flu
- HIV/AIDS
Each one has killed millions and has changed the world as we know it. But we still did survive, as we will after the coronavirus pandemic is over.
