WHAT IS MEDICAL GEOLOGY

Have you ever heard the word ‘medical geology?’ I have not heard it..(well, before I became medical geologist!).

I know it sounds too scientific as a term and I seem not to find the right words when I try to explain to someone what this discipline of geology is all about. So I will try to explain to you in the most simple way I can.

Medical geology has two components: geology and medicine. It is actually a scientific field that consists geoscientists with medical knowledge.

Why they needed to learn about the human body when their scope of their study is Earth? The reason is that we have come to realise that not all elements of Earth are beneficial for us.

There are some that are even lethal, like, for example arsenic or lead. Adding to this there are also minerals we use that maybe potentially harmful.

Medical geologist work is to identify this substances and prevent future (most often life threatening) illnesses in humans (and even in animals). The following video is a simplified explanation of medical geology, available on our YouTube channel.

Keep learning. Keep growing.
