SMART NATURE

Smart nature is possible and it may be the future. I know is sounds a strange term. Yet it maybe as well applicable in the end.

On the other hand smart cities is a very attractive term by many innovators. For years now there is a massive interest and investment towards smart cities. However how a system can be smart if it fails to live independent.

Event the smartest cities, now and the future, still depend in many ways on nature for resources. So how we can have smart cities and not smart nature.

Smart city definition

Smart city is an urban area that is technologically advanced. Within these cities there are a machines that collect data called ‘sensors’.

Hence authorities analyse these data and make decisions to manage traffic, power plants, services, water supply and many other.

Finally smart city is all about creating a more efficient city in its resources. Yet there are still many challenges that decision-makers have not solve.

Introducing smart nature

Since smart cities still rely on natural resources, we may consider to make nature smart as well. Yet we remain in cities creating even more problems of pollution.

On the other hand who would like to escape in nature if it is similar to a city. But that should not be the case of smart nature.

On the contrary, electronic devices in nature, at the beginning, are mainly our mobile phones and therefore us. Hence we can feed the system with data while we are travelling or living there.

Therefore the aim might be similar to a smart city. So we are aiming for a more efficient way to use our natural resources. This is very important in nature to control pollution.

Closing the gap between the city and nature

Still there is maybe another reason why we should pursue smart nature. By modifying the natural environment with high tech technology, we are creating a more familiar environment to us.

It is a strange belief but it is true. We are so dependent on technology and our lifestyle in cities, that we are becoming strangers to nature. Due to urbanisation most population of this planet are in cities. But living and staying in cities made us unaware of how nature is.

Most of us see nature as an escape of our boring routine. However more and more professionals migrate to rural areas because they can work via internet. In fact for many of us is the ultimate dream.

Smart nature and the impacts on the environment

Any change we are shifting towards should be one the framework of sustainable development. Even if we would like to make nature more familiar for us, the changes can be damaging the environment.

One important thing to remember is that nature is maybe more sensitive in change that a city. So we may use other technologies that are more appropriate.

An example can be augmented reality (AR). This technology is a tool that helps you enjoy and learn when you reconnect with nature.

Imaging the world to its worst scenario

From time when global warming and climate change became known, we saw different scenarios in films, books and articles.

What is mostly common is the necessity for us to change how we see nature. Still we do not understand what the future can be.

A book titled ‘Animate Planet by Kath Weston shows people effort to understand how this high-tech environmentally damaged world they have made is changing them.

It is a fascinate book filled with essays that draw out how our bodies, our foods, our waters, our devices, and our planet are all in connection.

Yet maybe the world can become a bit better every day with our own actions, for us and for future generations.

Keep learning. Keep growing.
